You probably understand that a number of cultures have differing versions of a Christmas figure like Santa Claus, but did you know that most regions also have their own traditions surrounding how to get rid of baby teeth? Here are a few of the ones we read about and thought you may like to learn about too. If you like them, you might even try one or two in your own home!
Some children in India dispose of their baby teeth by offering them to the sun, every now and then wrapping the teeth in a rag. In one part of India, children throw their lost teeth onto their roofs and ask rodents to replace it for one of their teeth. (Rodent teeth grow constantly, and adult human teeth will stay healthy for a long time if suitably cared for.) Tossing lost pearly whites into the sky or to the sun and asking for a better tooth is commonplace in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Sudan. And long ago, in premodern Britain, lost pearly whites were burnt! We don’t endorse incorporating that one into your traditions.
